Yoga & meditation

Movement, stillness and present-moment awareness.

An accessible introduction to the practices I teach and how each can support mind and body.

Hatha Yoga

A steady foundation.

Hatha Yoga is a traditional branch of yoga focused on physical postures, breathing techniques and mindfulness or meditation. It helps bring balance to body and mind and forms the foundation of many modern yoga styles.

Because of its slower pace and emphasis on fundamentals, Hatha is often an approachable place to start for people who are new to yoga.

Yin Yoga

Stillness and deep release.

Yin Yoga is a slow, meditative style in which poses are held for an extended period, typically three to ten minutes, while the muscles remain as relaxed as possible.

The practice focuses on deeper connective tissues, including fascia, ligaments, tendons and joints.

How they differ

Active engagement and passive stillness.

Yin Yoga

Long, passive holds that emphasise stillness, relaxation and deep stretching of connective tissues.

Hatha Yoga

A wider variety of postures, breathing practices and movement, often with more active muscle engagement.

Mindfulness

Awareness in everyday life.

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment on purpose and without judgement.

  • Noticing your breathing
  • Being aware of sounds around you
  • Paying attention while eating or walking
  • Observing thoughts and emotions without being carried away by them

Meditation

A dedicated practice.

Meditation is a structured exercise that trains the mind. Many meditation techniques use mindfulness as their foundation.

  1. Sit comfortably.
  2. Focus on your breath.
  3. Notice when the mind wanders.
  4. Gently bring attention back to the breath.

A simple distinction

Mindfulness is a quality of awareness. Meditation is an exercise that develops it.

Both can be practised gently, without needing to clear your mind or achieve a perfect pose.

Do I need to be flexible to start yoga?

No. Yoga can be adapted for different bodies, abilities and levels of mobility. Flexibility is not a requirement.

Is Hatha Yoga suitable for beginners?

Yes. Its slower pace and focus on fundamentals often make Hatha an accessible introduction to yoga.

What happens during meditation?

You will be guided to settle comfortably, focus your attention and gently return to the present when the mind wanders.

What should I bring to a class?

I will confirm the practical details when you book. Comfortable clothing and a yoga mat are usually a helpful starting point.
